Fall Photography Checklist: Are You Ready for Your Session?
Fall in Baldwin and Lake County is nothing short of magical ✨
The air turns crisp, the leaves explode into shades of gold and crimson, and suddenly everyone wants to capture their family against this stunning backdrop.
But here’s the thing, preparing for fall family photos can feel overwhelming.
Between wrangling toddlers, coordinating outfits, and hoping the weather cooperates, it’s easy to feel like you’re herding caffeinated squirrels .
The good news?
With a little preparation, your session can be relaxed, fun, and completely stress-free.
This checklist covers everything, from wardrobe choices to snack strategies, so you can show up feeling confident and excited.
Step 1: Wardrobe Planning
Coordinate, Don't Match
Outfit planning is often the biggest source of stress for families.
But it doesn’t have to be complicated. The golden rule?
Coordinate, don’t match.
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and khakis. Instead, choose a cohesive color palette with 2-3 complementary tones and let everyone’s personality shine through .
Start With Mom’s Outfit First
Tip: begin with one outfit you love, typically Mom’s, and build everyone else around it .
When you feel confident and comfortable, it shows in the photos. Choose something that flatters you and makes you feel beautiful.
A flowy dress, high-waisted jeans with a tucked-in blouse, or a soft sweater with texture all work beautifully .
Best Fall Colors for Photos
For fall sessions, warm, earthy tones photograph beautifully against the autumn foliage :
Recommended Colors:
Cream, oatmeal, camel, tan
Olive green, forest green
Rust, burnt orange, mustard yellow
Deep burgundy, maroon, navy
Soft sage, dusty rose
Colors to Avoid:
Neon or super bright colors (they distract from the natural vibe)
Bright whites (they can reflect too much light)
Colors that blend too much with the background (like muted greens)
Add Texture and Interest
Layers and textures add depth without being distracting :
Knit sweaters, corduroy, denim, and flannel
Cardigans, shawls, or soft jackets
Scarves, boots, and cozy accessories
Limit patterns to just 1–2 people and keep them subtle, small florals, soft stripes, or plaid in moderation . Too many busy patterns can distract from faces and feel dated.
Footwear Matters
Choose shoes that look intentional: boots, loafers, or simple dress shoes work well.
Avoid worn-out sneakers, flip-flops, or anything with neon colors.
Remember: you might be walking through fields or trails, so comfort matters too!
Step 2: The Day-Of Checklist
What to Bring
Packing the right items ensures your session flows smoothly. Here’s what to bring:
Must-Haves:
Snacks and water- keep everyone’s energy up (more on this below!)
Hand and face wipes- for quick touch-ups between shots
Touch-up items- hairbrush, lip balm, powder
Backup outfits- essential for babies and toddlers
Neutral blanket- for cozy prop or sitting in the leaves
Layers- jackets, cardigans, or scarves (Michigan weather is unpredictable!)
Tissues or wipes
What to Leave Behind:
Phones, Apple Watches, and keys (put them in your bag so they don’t distract!)
Large logos, cartoon characters, or busy patterns
Messy snacks (more on this below)
Distracting toys that might cause meltdowns when it’s time to put them away
Step 3: Snacks and Supplies for Kids
The Snack Strategy
Happy, fed kids make for a happy session. But not all snacks are created equal when it comes to photos.
Snacks That Work
The best snack options are mess-free, non-staining, and won’t leave sticky fingers :
Mini marshmallows (the top recommendation from photographers!)
Goldfish crackers or pretzels
Granola bars (mess-free varieties)
Water bottles for hydration
Snacks to Avoid
Keep these away from the session :
Chocolate (melts and stains)
Cheesy snacks (orange fingers!)
Lollipops (dyed tongues and sticky faces)
Anything that leaves crumbs or sticky residue
When to Offer Snacks
A quick snack before the session helps keep moods up.
Avoid offering snacks right before a shot, use them as a brief break or after the session as a reward.
And if you need a little bribe to get cooperation, the promise of ice cream afterward works wonders!
Step 4: Managing Expectations with Active Toddlers
Kids feed off your energy
The more relaxed you are, the easier this feels for them
Phrasing That Works
Instead of calling it a “photo session,” try language like:
“We’re going to hang out with our friend Angela and have a fun day!”
Or:
“We get to play, explore, and take pictures that we can hang in your room!”
Give them about a week’s notice so the idea isn’t a surprise. Show them pictures of your photographer (me!) and other families having fun so they know what to expect
Managing Meltdowns
Don’t worry about perfect behavior, it’s not the goal . The best photos often come from in-between moments: giggles, silly faces, snuggles, and even toddler meltdowns that turn into goofy cuddle piles .
Instead of correcting them when they’re not listening, try engaging them.
For example, instead of saying “stop grabbing that, smile!” try:
“Wow, you found a leaf! What color is it? Can you put it in my hand?”
This creates authentic moments of connection for me to capture!
The Nap Strategy
For evening sessions, adjust nap schedules so little ones are well-rested.
A happy toddler is worth every bit of nap logistics. And keep the day of your session low-key, save the zoo trips or birthday parties for another day.
Step 5: Backup Outfits and Comfort Items
Always pack a spare outfit for babies and toddlers
Backup Outfits
Accidents happen, spills, mud puddles, or diaper leaks. Having a backup means you won’t stress if something gets messy.
Consider bringing a spare shirt for older kids too, just in case.
Comfort Items
A small comfort item (favorite toy or blanket) can help kids feel at ease.
However, choose something neutral and photo-friendly, a An earth tone train or soft beige stuffed animal works better than a bright red toy that distracts .
Tip: get kids dressed at the location to avoid spills, wrinkles, or wardrobe disasters . They travel in comfy clothes and change right before the session starts.
Step 6: What to Bring and What to Leave at Home
Preparedness = Less Stress
Quick Packing List
Bring:
Water bottles
Wipes for quick cleanups
Snacks (mess-free options)
Backup outfits
Neutral blanket
Hairbrush and lip balm
Layers for changing weather
Tissues or wipes
Leave behind:
Phones, watches, keys (in the bag, not your pockets!)
Large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns
Messy snacks
Distracting toys
Arrive Early
Check your drive time an hour before leaving, fall weekends can bring unpredictable traffic.
Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early so no one’s frazzled and kids have time to settle adjust and settle in.
Step 7: Trust the Process
Relax and Enjoy Your Photo Shoot
Let Go of Perfection
The most beautiful photos aren’t the stiff “cheese” smiles, they’re the in-between giggles, tickle fights, snuggles, and even the messy moments .
When you’re in it, it doesn’t always feel pretty. Kids have messy hair, mismatched socks, or meltdowns. But that’s real life, and those are the moments that matter most .
Trust Your Photographer
My job is to guide you, find the best light, and capture the beautiful interactions that make your family unique .
I’ve seen it all, meltdowns, messy moments, and everything in between.
Your job is simply to enjoy your family. I’ll handle the rest.
Step 8: After the Session
Relax and Enjoy Your Photo Shoot
Plan for Holiday Cards
Mid-November is the typical cutoff for holiday cards and albums.
Book early to ensure delivery before the holidays. Don’t wait until December 22nd unless you’re ready for expedited shipping costs!
Display Your Photos
Your photos deserve more than digital storage, they deserve to be seen and celebrated.
Consider:
Custom albums
Framed prints for your walls
Holiday cards to share with loved ones
Gallery walls that tell your family’s story
Make It a Tradition
Annual fall photos become a treasured family tradition.
When I photograph the same families year after year, I love watching how their kids grow, how relationships evolve, and how their love deepens.
Final Thoughts
Your family's story is unfolding right now
With a little preparation, you can walk into your session feeling relaxed, confident, and excited.
The most beautiful photos happen when you’re focused on each other, not the camera.
So take a deep breath, pack the snacks, and remember: the goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection .
And if you’re in Baldwin, or anywhere in Lake County, I’d love to capture your family’s story this fall. Let’s create that special snap shot.
